Lessons learned on the dunes of the sleeping bear from the bear plant itself.

Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is said to have been and still be an important ingredient in a First Nations ceremonial smoking mixture ‘Kinnikinnick’. Colonial physicians used the leaves as a toning astringent for the urinary and reproductive systems. Modern clinical use also celebrates this toning effect.

The evergreen ground-cover thrives in the sandy soils of the Great Lakes coastlines. I enjoyed witnessing how it stretches across the landscape.
