The Story of the Yarrow Distillation

Sometimes staying true to ourselves and our path requires that we learn to listen more closely to our instincts and cultivate a deeper relationship with our intuition. Navigating being human, at least in part, has always been driven by such inner-yet-otherworldly senses…and being human is a grand adventure indeed. The Page of Wands from the Uusi Pagan Otherworlds tarot deck and the Intuition card from the Uusi Supra Oracle were pulled, signifying fearlessness, openness, and vision that living an intuitive life can bring.

Many traditions across space and time have associated this ‘sixth sense’ with that of the ‘good mother’, an archetype which represents the nurturing, womb-wisdom of the divine Feminine. The theme of matrilineal knowledge surrounds this distillation; Erika’s mother sat with her through this distillation, singing, reading poetry, and talking about gardens. Newly hatched pipevine swallowtail caterpillars (Battus philenor) fed on their host plant which grows upon Erika’s front porch. How mama pipevine swallowtail managed to find this perfect habitat for her young is truly a remarkable manifestation of her inner, motherly senses, as neither the species of butterfly or their favorite host plants are abundant in these parts.

The story of this Yarrow distillation also exemplifies the plant’s wound-healing and protecting qualities. As an herb of the Sun, the mythology of Yarrow tells the story of it being gifted to Achilles by his teacher Chiron, the great healer, so that he might mend the wounds of his heroic soldiers…so that he could protect them from harm. Citrine was incorporated into the distillation to represent the warmth and light of the Sun, but also as a totem to the solar plexus, the home of our ‘gut instincts’.

The buttery yet tingly aroma of this Yarrow hydrosol is for individuals that require support in trusting their instincts, especially those which are needed to travel into uncharted territories. Let this aroma offer you healing from previous battles and protect you from the twists of fate that may be encountered on your personal adventure of becoming who you are truly meant to be.

Each hydrosol comes with a 2 x 3.5 card which displays images that tell the story of that specific distillation as well as keywords that highlight its ceremonial procurement and possible psychic or energetic application. Although these images may seem disjunct, they do indeed tell a tale of a particular moment in time as the lives of the plants being distilled are celebrated and relationships with the plants are being formed. However, we encourage you to explore the symbolism of each hydrosol on your own terms, from your own perspectives.

“Our aromatic hydrosols, just like our flower essences, are preparations that celebrate the healing potential of metaphor, myth, and story. Each distillation captures a moment in time...a specific and intentional attempt to foster a deeper relationship with the plants and with ourselves; it is as if we are given the opportunity to experience the plants’ souls, and they ours. In this exchange we become characters in their collective stories and they become characters in our stories...and a healing companionship is born. In addition, I truly believe that when we are able to share in a plant’s story, as told through their aroma, we are often able to learn something about ourselves. It is our hope that through our hydrosols we are able to celebrate with others the magic of these exchanges and inspire your own relationship building, both with the plants and with Self.” - Erika Galentin, Clinical Herbalist, Distiller, & Co-creator at Sovereignty Herbs
