The Story of the Vetiver-Sweetgrass Distillation
As plants which have traversed a long history of human interaction, both Vetiver and Sweetgrass own rich stories to tell. Both species prefer habitats with an abundance of water, holding back the soil when erosion is likely. They seem to thrive with harvesting, getting choked out if not interacted with by human hands. Both are members of Poaceae, the mighty grass family, and both have ceremonial significance to the peoples from where they are native; Vetiver from India and Sweetgrass from North America. Material used to distill this hydrosol are from plants grown and harvested from our gardens in Hocking County, OH.
Water has often been likened to emotions, the flow of which representing their release into the world. But just like gushing rivers, free-flowing emotions can wear away the banks that are meant to guide and direct them. Unchecked flooding can be both nourishing to a dry, infertile earth, or completely and utterly destructive. Perhaps there is much to be emotional about, but sometimes we can get lost in our most affecting moments, especially when they are charged with anger and wrath. The rooty-sweet aroma of this hydrosol is for folks who are struggling to ‘rein it in’, who are needing to practice temperance.
Icelandic feldspar and smokey quartz accompanied this distillation, one to find perspective and the other to ward off the downward spiral of negativity. Temperance was pulled from the Tarot deck during the distillation. The most fitting of cards for this aroma, the Temperance card asks us to assess what part of ourselves is truly making the decisions, animating our emotions. It speaks of moderation and being honest as we keep ourselves in check…that sometimes the best course of action is to rein it in. The Spirit card was also pulled (Uusi Supra Oracle), suggesting that in our most tempered moments, perhaps we are closest to the source of our inner power.
Each hydrosol comes with a 2 x 3.5 card which displays images that tell the story of that specific distillation as well as keywords that highlight its ceremonial procurement and possible psychic or energetic application. Although these images may seem disjunct, they do indeed tell a tale of a particular moment in time as the lives of the plants being distilled are celebrated and relationships with the plants are being formed. However, we encourage you to explore the symbolism of each hydrosol on your own terms, from your own perspectives.

Local, sustainable aromatherapy. Artisan hydrosols distilled with intention from plants grown and stewarded in Appalachia.
“Our aromatic hydrosols, just like our flower essences, are preparations that celebrate the healing potential of metaphor, myth, and story. Each distillation captures a moment in time...a specific and intentional attempt to foster a deeper relationship with the plants and with ourselves; it is as if we are given the opportunity to experience the plants’ souls, and they ours. In this exchange we become characters in their collective stories and they become characters in our stories...and a healing companionship is born. In addition, I truly believe that when we are able to share in a plant’s story, as told through their aroma, we are often able to learn something about ourselves. It is our hope that through our hydrosols we are able to celebrate with others the magic of these exchanges and inspire your own relationship building, both with the plants and with Self.” - Erika Galentin, Clinical Herbalist, Distiller, & Co-creator at Sovereignty Herbs
