The Story of the Chamomile Distillation
This distillation is an ode to the American Herb Farmers out there working tirelessly to provide herbalists like us with high quality fresh herbs for our medicinal and aromatic products. This batch of chamomile hydrosol was distilled from 5 pounds of fresh flowers from our friends at Black Locust Gardens in Michigan and represents our first batch of hydrosol ever produced from plants grown outside of Appalachia. We had never distilled chamomile before and were inspired to do so after making a batch of tincture from fresh chamomile provided to us by another awesome herb farm, Maple Spring Gardens. After experiencing the fresh tincture, we were eager to finally distill chamomile, but 5 pounds of chamomile flowers (the amount needed for a 20L still) represents a ton of work and way more land than we have available for growing just a single crop. So we reached out to Black Locust Gardens and they provided us with the most beautiful flowers to distill. We were so inspired that it was clear that this distillation needed to be dedicated to American herb farmers as a salute to their hard work and perseverance. As of this listing, Erika is writing an article about this distillation experience and the plight of American herb farmers across the country for AromaCulture Magazine.
The lessons taught to us by the plight of the American herb farmer truly mirror those taught to us by Chamomile. In fact, in the old language of flowers chamomile symbolizes ‘strength through adversity’ and its gentle, yet persistent medicinal and aromatic actions reflect the steadfastness and perseverance needed to harvest their flowers, one by one, bent over in the summer’s sun.
Distilled in June 2019 as we approach the Summer Solstice, the Sun tarot card was pulled from the Rider-Waite deck, a card of victory and accomplishment, perhaps a prayer of a bright and prosperous future for American herb farmers. The Impasse card from the Uusi Supra Oracle was pulled representing the many obstacles that these hard-working, brave souls encounter in their work. The woodpecker feather was incorporated into the distillation to honor the forage, the harvest (woodpeckers work pretty hard for theirs!), and finally, rose quartz…for the love of the plants and their dedication they inspire in us all.
Each hydrosol comes with a 2 x 3.5 card which displays images that tell the story of that specific distillation as well as keywords that highlight its ceremonial procurement and possible psychic or energetic application. Although these images may seem disjunct, they do indeed tell a tale of a particular moment in time as the lives of the plants being distilled are celebrated and relationships with the plants are being formed. However, we encourage you to explore the symbolism of each hydrosol on your own terms, from your own perspectives.

Local, sustainable aromatherapy. Artisan hydrosols distilled with intention from plants grown and stewarded in Appalachia.
“Our aromatic hydrosols, just like our flower essences, are preparations that celebrate the healing potential of metaphor, myth, and story. Each distillation captures a moment in time...a specific and intentional attempt to foster a deeper relationship with the plants and with ourselves; it is as if we are given the opportunity to experience the plants’ souls, and they ours. In this exchange we become characters in their collective stories and they become characters in our stories...and a healing companionship is born. In addition, I truly believe that when we are able to share in a plant’s story, as told through their aroma, we are often able to learn something about ourselves. It is our hope that through our hydrosols we are able to celebrate with others the magic of these exchanges and inspire your own relationship building, both with the plants and with Self.” - Erika Galentin, Clinical Herbalist, Distiller, & Co-creator at Sovereignty Herbs
