Clinical Training Week Intensives 2019

WEEK 1: July 8-12, 2019 & WEEK 2: OCTOBER 14-18, 2019

How exciting that you are pursuing the path of becoming a clinical herbalist! Setting up a clinical practice is daunting and requires direction, support, and confidence. When first starting out in clinical practice, there are many factors to consider; from clinical skills, forms, and policies to preparing your own extracts, formulating for clients, and managing your dispensary. Our clinical intensive program weeks have been designed to unpack the many facets of clinical practice, remove some of the start-up guesswork, and prime you for the experience of real-life clinical practice and what it might entail for you.

Upon completion of the program, you will be presented with a certificate of attendance as well as a breakdown of educational hours if you are pursuing ‘Registered Herbalist’ designation with the American Herbalists Guild.

CURRICULUM

Each clinical intensive week surrounds the Athens Ohio Free Herbal Clinic and will include an opportunity for you to directly observe clinical cases (we will work diligently to have clinical bookings for that day, but we can not make direct contact hour guarantees). Each week will also include elements of the following:

PREREQUISITES

We encourage all who have the completed the following prerequisites to apply:

  • Have one of the following: 1) a diploma or certificate of graduation from a formal clinical herbalism program, 2) have 2-3 years of intensive herbal study in a formal clinical herbalism program (or similar) -or- 3-5 years self-study (you will be asked to disclose education in the application).

  • Have intermediate to advanced training in anatomy, physiology, & pathophysiology from a formal college, herb school, or online course.

  • Be able to perform searches using PubMed or similar research databases.

  • Be fluent in structure/function language and familiar with dietary supplement regulations, specifically DSHEA. 

  • Understand and support Sovereignty Herbs’ Nondiscrimination Policy and Statement.

SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION

We require you to fill out an application for our clinical intensive weeks to ensure that all participants have the necessary prerequisites to fully participate in the programming. In addition, only four (4) spots are available for each training week. Due to this limited availability we wanted to have a transparent application process that ensured that all applicants are considered by equal measure.

  2. A letter of recommendation from an herbal colleague, herbal teacher or mentor, or employer from an herb-related job, apprenticeship, or internship

DEADLINES AND APPLICATION PROCESS

Deadline for Applications to Week 1 (July 8-12, 2019): April 1, 2019

Deadline for Applications to Week 2 (October 14-18, 2019): July 1, 2019

Places in our Clinical Intensive Week will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be sure to indicate your desired placement in Week 1, Week 2, or EITHER (if you are able to attend either week). Special considerations will be made for applicants wanting to attend BOTH Week 1 and Week 2.

Once submitted, your application will be under review. You will be notified of your status to the program via email by April 30, 2019 for the July session or July 31, 2019 for the October session. A follow-up phone interview with our program director, Brooke Sackenheim, will be scheduled shortly thereafter to provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions about the program and logistics.

Once you have been accepted you will be required to pay a $200 USD non-refundable deposit to hold your place in the program (see ‘Fees and Payment Schedule’ below. You will also be sent a confidentiality and code of conduct statement to review, sign, and submit with your final payment.

FEES AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE

Cost for program week: $800.00 USD*

Upon acceptance to the program, a $200 non-refundable deposit to hold your spot is due by May 8, 2019 for the July Program or August 7, 2019 for the October Program. Balance of program cost is due by June 7, 2019 for the July Program and September 6, 2019 for the October Program. Payments can be paid by check or money order to Sovereignty Herbs. *Travel, accomodation, and meals are not included in tuition price. Successful applicants will be responsible for making their own travel and room and board arrangements. We recommend flying in and out of Columbus International Airport (CMH). Please note that our clinic office is located in Athens, OH which is approximate 1.5 hour drive from Columbus. We will have discounted accommodations available in Columbus and commuter support from Columbus, OH to Athens, OH. Upon acceptance into the intensive week, we will provide further information about traveling to and from Columbus, OH for clinic days should you choose to stay in Columbus, OH.

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS

Our program is unable to accept more than four (4) students at a time. However, in order to run the program successfully we will require a minimum of two (2) accepted applicants. If for some reason we are unable to secure a minimum of two (2) students per session, we will notify you immediately and refund your deposit and any payments you have made toward the program. In order to avoid financial losses due to having to cancel traveling plans, we highly recommend that you consider purchasing traveling insurance. Sovereignty Herbs is not responsible for refunding travel and/or accommodations losses resulting from cancellation of our program.

Non-refundable deposits (due upon acceptance) are non-refundable. If you make payments beyond this non-refundable deposit but find that you are unable to attend your intended program, you will be offered a place in a subsequent clinical intensive week or provided with a refund for payments made within 1 month of withdrawing from the program. Unless under extremely special circumstances, there will be no refunds for individuals who choose to leave the program after it has begun. However, these types of circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
