Herbs & Asana: Full Sensory Exploration

  • Yoga on High 1020 Dennison Ave., Suite 202 Columbus OH 43201 United States (map)

Our first experiences with herbs are usually transactional. We take an herb to solve a problem. Need to relax? Use lavender. Have a headache? Peppermint will help that. The same can be said about yoga. Many of us start out wanting to change our bodies, to lose weight, or be more active. Yet, as our practice deepens we find that our relationship with the poses change. The same is true with our use of plants in support of our wellbeing; they become a way of grounding and exploring the mind and body rather than treating its problems.

In this experiential three hour class, herbalist Brooke Sackenheim of Sovereignty Herbs and somatic therapist Tara Hedges, RYT will teach participants about how engaging medicinal herbs through our senses in combination with movement of yoga can facilitate change in our perspectives of our bodies while also cultivating kindred relationships with our minds. To demonstrate this perfect marriage of movement and medicinal plants, we will explore one plant through several preparations: a tea, an elixir, and an aromatic hydrosol. Each preparation will be paired with a series of movements flowing in and out of asana to facilitate the felt experience of how the plant interacts with the body and the mind. Collectively we will have information that can tell us the identity of the plant. In the end you will have new ways of deepening your practice with both yoga and herbs.

Please bring paper and pen for note taking. This will not be a full asana class. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have food sensitivities please contact us for consideration.
